John, your comments in this article are well stated. If one can get the concept of "natural" down it would go well in their efforts. Anything too sudden like adding 50 inbound links one day and none for 3 months will be less exciting to the serps than trickling in a few per day. Fellow RE bloggers could agree to submit articles to each others sites with anchor text links in the article that point inner pages of the authors site. Or, just simply agree to link to each other.. I write a post and hyperlink a keyword in the post to a page on your site that you would like to receive a link for. (deep linking using anchor text).. and so forth.

I do agree that the best way to get content out there is via a blog. However, I can also see your point about their value being overstated. In the end you still have to research the proper keywords, understand your competition, and know how to attract qualified traffic and convert it. There is no "the answer" to succeeding online, unless the answer is to invest considerable time and effort into learning what works and implementing it. I would make the same switch that Las Vegas guy made -- if I hadn't already done so four years ago :) -- but I would also add some serious upfront research because competing for Las Vegas is a tough way to go.

I don't know about overvalued, but blogs are the hot thing right now. If you don't have one, you're going to be left out in the cold. I just switched from my template provider to a website with an integrated blog. I think it will be a far better solution in the short and long run.

The comment above says it all - what clients really want to do is to find their new home! The value of blogging is overstated. In the same way that everyone used to say that keywords are the answer - they were until they were abused. Now Google & Yahoo don't even really look at keywords except to see if you are spamming them.

Joanne, thanks so much for stopping by.

Hey, someone agrees with me! :)

Actually I think I'll have some more numerical reasons to agree next week when I write about Google analytics and bounce rates. I really do think that we tend to overrate our role as pundits, when all our clients really want are houses (sort of by definition).

I absolutely agree, especially as I have a blog and website that are integrated. I did away with pay per click some time ago, and the long tail (and short tail) of searches is bringing people in.
